Did you know? Island Green Retail Park has a fascinating place in Welsh history!

Back in 1876, long before it became the shopping destination we know today, Island Green in Wrexham was the site of the National Eisteddfod — a cornerstone of Welsh culture and creativity.

It was here that the Eisteddfod awarded its first ever “black chair” — a solemn honour given posthumously to poet Thomas Jones (Taliesin o Eifion), who sadly passed away just after submitting his winning poem. The ceremony was filled with emotion as the bards draped the winner’s chair in black and the crowd listened to “Dafydd y Garreg Wen” sung through tears.

The 1876 event was a true milestone — attracting around 25,000 visitors, complete with an “immense pavilion” that could hold 8,000 people! It even hosted the first Eisteddfod post office, equipped with telegraph lines so journalists could send their reports straight from the festival floor.

Prizes were awarded for everything from poetry and music to photography, flannel, carved oak, and even North Wales minerals — celebrating the incredible creativity of the people of Wales.

Today, this historic site forms part of Island Green Retail Park, where history and community still meet in the heart of Wrexham.
